Defining Genre in Digital/Multimodal Social Commentary Compositions

The digital social commentary I chose are deep-fried memes. "Deep-fried" memes are essentially memes that have a lot of edits done to them picture wise so that the picture looks grainy and washed out with a high contrast. Usually in these memes, the text and font are always designed differently. Some multimodal elements each of these pictures has is different text and font and even some have enhancements on the text. Like the first image has emphasis on the word "funeral." In the second image, the word "CEASE" is capitalized whereas the rest of the words are in lowercase. There are also many different images in each meme that helps convey the meme message.

The repetition of the "deep-friedness" and having many edits to the picture helps reinforce the genre elements and the sarcasm in the memes.
